Northerns cruise past Boksburg

Benoni Northerns sealed their Premier League encounter against Boksburg with a Rhenier Jordaan unbeaten 73 setting up a comfortable 125-run victory at PG Park for the visitors on Sunday, January 26.

The champions remained second on the log after the win following log leaders Kempton Park’s annihilation of Actonville Spurs.

Boksburg skipper, Len Meyer, who won the pre-match coin toss, sent the visitors out to bat first and Northerns happily obliged as they raced to 81 in the early stages of their innings. The solid start paved the way for Jordaan’s entry who virtually sealed the match for the visitors.

All-rounder, Ernst Kemm, who was tipped as one of the players to look out for during the build-up week of the match, opened his team’s innings with a score of 43, with opening partner Levon Shields only managing four before his dismissal.

Jordaan’s exploits were preceded by a Stephan Jordaan seven, a Vaughn Humphrey five with captain, Kurt Francis, chirping in with a seven of his own before Shaun Wessels’ unbeaten 21 in the last wicket put the visitors on 226 after 50 overs.

In their quest to reach the target of 227, Meyer produced a stand-out performance for his side with a smashing 45 but that was as far as it went for the hosts with half their batting order dismissed for a duck.

All of Sean Holder, Louis Grobler, Freddie Whitehorne (both middle order), Herman Meyer Junior and Ruben Scheepers (both bottom order) were given their marching orders without scoring.

Northerns’ GC Pretorius and Boksburg’s Holder both took three wickets on the day but Scheepers impressed more than the lot with 4/ 37.

Despite Scheepers’ attack, Northerns eased to victory after bowling out the hosts in 26.1 overs for 101.
