Malawi cyclist killed on Main Reef

A Malawian cyclist was killed when he was hit by a light vehicle while he was riding on Main Reef Road, Angelo informal settlement, on Saturday afternoon, January 18.

Demobry Ngalandea was with a large crowd watching soccer at a nearby tavern when he heard a loud bang.

Along with the crowd they rushed to the scene to check what had happened. It was only when Ngalandea got there, when he discovered that the person lying unresponsive on the ground was his uncle.

There was little Ngalandea and the crowd could do to save the dying man, who is believed to have been in his late 40s or early 50s.

Paramedics certified the cyclist dead on the scene.

Witnesses described the horror of seeing the cyclist flying through the air after being hit by the vehicle.

The bicycle landed about 15 metres away from the cyclist.

Police are investigating how and why the collision occurred. A case of culpable homicide was registered at the Boksburg SAPS.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested, but he was later released after being issued with a warning, while police make further inquiries.

Ngalandea says it appears his uncle had been riding down the road and was turning left into the informal settlement, where he lived, when he collided with the vehicle.

The vehicle was travelling westbound on Main Reef.

Members of the community attempted to attack the driver, but he was very fortunate that a patrolling police van was approaching the scene.
