Metro blames community for park turning into dumping site

The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni recently released a statement expressing disbelief on the building of a park by municipality in the middle of what has become a dumpsite.

The said park is situated on Strandloper and Byvreter Street in Windmill Park in front of Thula Sizwe Primary School, and is said to have been built less than six months ago.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) says they regularly maintain the park, but members of the community utilise the park as a dumping site on a daily basis, and clearing it stretches the metro’s resources.

“Like every other park under our jurisdiction, once every two weeks the park is maintained, whereby litter picking, cleaning, grass cutting, etc. are done,” says metro spokesperson Mandlakazi Mpahlwa-Sigcawu.

Mpahlwa-Sigcawu says there will be no change unless the community stops littering and dumping.

“The park will continue to look the way it does, irrespective of the extent of development we provide. The ward committee is involved in assisting to alleviate this problem through education and awareness, but it currently remains problematic.”
