Boksburg to play in Limpopo for Community Cup opener

Boksburg Rugby Club will face BB Truck Noordelikes of Limpopo in their opening pool C match of the 2014 Cell C Community Cup.

The match will take place at the BB Truck Noordelikes ground in Polokwane on Saturday, March 8.

This came after the confirmation of fixtures for the tournament was made by the South African Rugby Union (Saru) on Friday, November 15.

Boksburg was chosen as one of five wild cards to participate in the cup after finishing as runners-up to Brakpan in the Valke League.

Defending champions Gap Management Despatch, will square up against arch-rivals Spring Rose, while a daunting cross-country journey of almost 3 000km awaits 2013 bronze-medallists Brakpan, who will travel to Wellington in the Western Cape to play Boland champions Roses United in the other Pool C encounter.

In Pool A, South Western Districts (SWD) Premier League rivals Mossel Bay Barbarians, another of the tournament’s five wild cards, and Bridgton square off in a rematch of the SWD Premier League final where the Barbarians suffered a heartbreaking 25-24 loss, thanks to a dramatic try after the final hooter.

“The countdown to the second edition of the Cell C Community Cup is now well and truly underway, and with just over 100 days to go till kick-off, the interest is already building,” said Saru CEO Jurie Roux.

“It’s an incredibly demanding tournament, and doubly so if you think that none of the 600-odd players who will take part are professional rugby players.

“Teams will be travelling a combined distance of almost 24 000km during the pool stages, which is an average return trip of 600km for each of the 40 matches that will be played.

“For the players it will be an unforgettable experience and a perfect platform to showcase their skills, not only to the crowds that will turn out to watch them, but also to the provincial coaches who will be watching the matches with interest.”

The two highest-placed clubs in each of the four pools will qualify for the Easter Championship play-offs, to be played at Outeniqua Park, in George, from April 17 to 21.
