Baker takes to the long road to aid man’s best friend

Suzanne Baker from Boksburg took part in the 800km fundraising walk for the South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind (SAGA) from October 1 to 18.

The walk also served to raise awareness for all service dogs.

The journey started in St Jean Pied de Port in France and ended in Santiago, Spain.

Baker, who’s a social worker by trade, walked 313km of the total 800km in a period of two weeks – ending in the city of Burgos, Spain.

On her way to Burgos, she passed four Spanish districts, including Basque country, the provinces of Navarra, La Rioja and Leon.

The project was approved by SAGA, which trains approximately 80 dogs a year, with the country having more than 300 dogs working as guide dogs, improving the living quality for people with disabilities.

Baker explained how the project exceeded her expectations upon her return.

“My target before I started the walk was to raise R5 000, but the money that came in is R20 750,” said the excited 51-year-old.

Baker also walked 250km on the Camino in Spain last year from Ponferrada to Santiago.

All funds raised go directly to the SAGA account.

If you would like to make a donation, you can deposit the amount in the SAGA account: Nedbank (Nicolway), account number 1522034498, branch code 198765. Reference Joss Camino and your own name, the swift code for international transfers is NEDSZAJJ.

People who make contributions are advised to send an e-mail to fundraising@guidedog.org.za, informing Jayne Nicolle of the bank transfer.
