The government is planning on implementing laws to take away driver’s licences of motorists who show that they’re a danger on the road.
“If you are reckless and a danger on our roads, we will take that licence, because you would have just proven to us that you cannot be trusted with that,” she said.
She added that other countries have done it and they believe it is a viable option.
Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, says that the minister may have said those words in the context of the current unacceptable fatality rates due to accidents and the fact that the country is vying for a reduction of fatalities by 50 per cent by 2015.
“In the light of that, the Minister probably has something in the pipeline in respect of enacting a law in this regard, nothing concrete as yet though.”
He adds that motorists must be aware though that any driver found to have been grossly reckless and negligible in causing death, injury or damage to property, courts can rule that a driving license be suspended.
“For example, in the cases of speedsters who exceed the speed limit by more than 30km/h on ‘surface roads’ or 40km/h on freeways, the courts may suspend a licence for six months in respect of first offenders.”
He adds that with second and third offender, the driving license can be suspended for five to 10 years respectively.
