Gunning for a hatrick of world titles
Kayla Venter is set to participate in the World 3D Archery Championships in Potchefstroom, which will take place from October 2 to 5.
3D archery is a subset of field archery focusing on shooting at life-size models of game and is popular with hunters.
It is most common to see unmarked distances in 3D archery, as the goal is to accurately recreate a hunting environment for competition.
The Grade 6 pupil from Laerskool Westwood will be gunning for her third world title in next month’s event, which would make her the first student in South African history to win three world titles.
Her first involvement in the sport was at a raw age of 10, and the rest was history.
Three months on after her first encouner with a bow and arrow, she participated in her first indoor competition which went so well for her, she then decided to participate in the World Indoor Championships, which were held in Pretoria in October 2011 – where she won gold in the tub division (participants are 13 years of age and younger).
Things went from great to even better the following year for her, as she went on to Argentina to represent the country in the 2012 World Field Championships where she also achieved gold in the tub category to make her mark on the world stage.
Apart from having received national colours already (indoor colours in 2011 and 2012; field colours in 2012 and 3D colours in 2013), Kayla holds four world records which are also national records.
She holds the field record of 558 points out of a possible 560; her hunter record is 560 which is a full score; her animal record is also a full score of 560 and she also holds the world indoor record of 300 with 59Xs out of a possible 60.
