A cleansing levy or a dirtying deal

Following a complaint received by a Witfield resident, questioning a fixed monthly area cleansing levy to the amount of R5.70 by the Ekurhuleni municipality, The Advertiser learned that the levy is now being retracted.

According to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Sam Modiba, the levy has not yet been approved and the municipality will issue a statement with further information on the matter.

Despite that the levy has not been approved, residents however, have noticed that the fee has reflected on their statements for the past two months.

According to information sourced by the Advertiser, it is alleged that there are internal issues with the levy, which appear in the municipal’s financial statements as an error.

The information also reveals that the metro was aware of the unhappiness expressed by many residents who noticed the additional charge on their monthly accounts.

The Witfield resident complained of how she and other residents are paying this monthly fee and yet their area is still unkempt.

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the municipality.

  1. This levy has and is still present on my account, surely street cleaners which are never seen in my area, should be included as part of the “Tax” we pay to the council.

What next? A levy for buying new dump trucks which never gets removed from the account?
