The workers were conducting their Rand Water pipeline patrol when they suspected that the manhole had been tampered with.
“It was around 9am when we made the discovery. We were not sure if it was a body, since the man was facing downwards,” says an employee of Rand Water.
Spokesperson for EMS, William Ntladi, confirms the incident, and says he was stopped by the Rand Water workers while driving past the scene of the incident.
“We suspect that a fire was made in the hole and the man was overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning,” he says.
Ntladi says the shaft appears as though it is used as lodging for more than one person, as there were a few blankets laid out.
Police are still investigating the incident and cause of death.
