Animal Run attracts hundreds of bikers
Motorcycle clubs, fanatics, families and animal lovers all bore the morning chill on September 1, to gather at the Cardinal’s Baseball Club in support of the second annual SPCA Animal Run.
The bikers showed up in a spectacular display after riding, and being marshalled by road rangers and the Ekurhuleni Metro Traffic Police Department, from Checkers-Hyper in Edenvale to the venue.
It was a mass ride that almost closed down the streets of Ekurhuleni.
The fun day was in aid of the Ekurhuleni SPCA branches, including Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Germiston, Kempton Park, Nigel and Springs.
According to Wilma Steynbergh, Boksburg SPCA manager, after the inaugural SPCA Animal Run in 2012, which was a roaring success, raising close to R80 000, the SPCA was eager to once again raise loads of money through the event.
“The day is an initiative to create and raise awareness for the SPCA and the plight of animals, however, it is also important to raise funds which will be distributed to all the Ekurhuleni SPCA’s afterwards,” said Wilma.
The Boksburg SPCA is constantly trying to reunite animals with their owners and place others in new homes because they believe every animal deserves a chance at being part of a loving home.
The Animal Run attracted more than 900 bikes from more than 20 clubs and seemingly more than 1 000 people from all parts of the metro.
The event proved to be a fun-filled family day with a beer tent for the adults, a mechanical bull for entertainment and a flea market for the whole family.
