Inmate gets nailed

Thamsamqa Mtshiza (29) from Eden Park appeared in the Boksburg Magistrates Court recently, initially on a charge of attempted murder with a nail-gun.

The charge against Mtshiza, who is an inmate at the Boksburg Department of Corrections, was changed to assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

On March 8, the accused and two other inmates were in the woodworks area at the prison, when he and one of the inmates got into an argument.

Mtshiza shot the inmate in the back with a nail gun.

He was serving a sentence for house break-in and theft.

The accused also had previous convictions of possession of stolen property from June 2006, and escaping from prison in September 2006.

Magistrate Kganki Phahlamohlaka sentenced him to a further 12 months imprisonment.

Patrick Thobejane, communications officer for the Department of Corrections, confirmed the incident.
