Most motorists to pay very little – Sanral
E-tolling won’t cost motorists a fortune, according to the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

According to Vusi Mona, spokesperson for Sanral, the vast majority will only pay R100 a month.
“Only a fraction of users of the Gauteng Road Improvement Project (GFIP) will pay the maximum monthly cost of using the road, capped at R450 for those who have registered,” he says.
Sanral used actual data from its toll collection system to calculate these figures.
“The initial calculations were done over a two-month period, however, the system has been live for 12 months, and these conclusions were confirmed to be accurate over the longer period too.”
Of the 2.5-m vehicles checked in this manner, only 4 700 will pay the capped R450 a month.
“If you are one of those paying the maximum amount, you will have travelled through 301 gantries and done an average of 2 760 km during the month on the e-tolled roads.
“That is, of course, if you are fitted with an e-tag, and have an up-to-date registered account,” he says.
Sanral’s plate recognition has shown what motorists will pay monthly:
*82.83 per cent will pay less than a R100.
* 10.10 per cent will pay R101 to R200.
* 1.82 per cent will pay R201 to R300.
* 0.59 per cent will pay R300 to R450.
“Public transport operators can apply for exemption; visitors from outside Gauteng will have to pay toll; duplicate or cloned numberplates will be picked by the e-Toll system, because an e-tag is registered to one numberplate only,” adds Mona.
