The new law being drafted to make it illegal for parents to spank their children at home is causing a heated debate in the community. The Advertiser asked Boksburg residents what they think of the new Bill and whether or not they agree with government dictating how they should raise their children.
Andre Matthee: “I don’t agree with this law. They are taking away our personal rights as parents to raise our kids and discipline them.”
Gary van der Walt: “I think government should worry more about important things such as corruption within government. Abusing kids is wrong, but there are more important issues that the government should focus on.”
Elaine Mcdonalds: “I can see why they would make it illegal, because of child abuse, but then, on the other hand, the kids are becoming unruly. Individuals on their own aren’t balanced enough to discipline their children, therefore I propose that there be a discipline committee consisting of teachers, parents and psychologists to come up with alternative methods of discipline.”
Hilton Cupido: “I say no to the new law; the kids are getting out of hand, because now there’s no corporal punishment. I say they must be spanked.”
Thabisile Zulu: “Children don’t listen if they are not disciplined. They must be spanked, but not battered, so that they can learn from their mistakes. If children aren’t spanked they will become undisciplined and unruly.”
Angelique Nel: “It’s difficult, I don’t agree with the new law, because there’s nothing wrong with reprimanding your kids. I was spanked as a child and I turned out fine.”
Renier Slabbert: “I think its rubbish, how do we then discipline our children?”
