Rape in Boksburg Prison alarmingly high
Prison rapes at the Boksburg Prison are alarmingly high, according to W/O David Rafanyane, spokesperson for the Dawn Park SAPS.
“The Katlehong cluster includes Dawn Park, Vosloorus, Thokoza, Katlehong, Zonke and Eden Park.
“The cluster Community Police Forum (CPF) members meet twice a month with NGO’s and social workers to address rape and assault in prisons, and to try and find solutions to this problem,” he says.
According to Rafanyane, the prison offers schooling to inmates, church facilities, as well as sports activities to keep them occupied, in order to decrease the number of indecent acts reported.
He also says that psychological assessments are done on inmates to monitor their progress and mental stability.
“Whenever a case of rape by an inmate is reported, the offender is charged and his sentence is added to the existing sentence he is serving. This is the problem we are faced with in prison,” he adds.
