#Lockdown legends: Caxtonites and their families get knitting for a good cause
The completed handiwork will be distributed to various organisations which support the underprivileged in winter.
The Advertiser’s annual winter wool drive yielded bundles of donations and used knitting needles by mid-March.
The dilemma was now of course the national Covid-19 lockdown, which started at midnight on March 26.
Elize Kluyts, advertising manager at the Advertiser, co-ordinates the annual effort to get wool donations which can in turn be handed over to organisations who knit for the needy.
“We were thrilled with the amount of wool and knitting needles we had received just before lockdown.
“It seemed a waste to just leave it all lying in a box at the office, so I quickly handed out wool and needles to colleagues at Caxton Local Media, and asked them to knit some squares while on lockdown,” Kluyts explained.
The idea was to sew the squares together to make lap blankets when everyone was back at work, but Kluyts received news some of the eager knitters had already completed more than one lap blanket!
“The response from our colleagues and their families to jump in and get knitting over lockdown has been incredible, and we thank each and every one who has made the effort,” she said.

Those eager to participate can either still donate wool and knitting needles (after lockdown) or, why wait? Grab some wool at home and get knitting – knit a scarf, beanie, gloves or blanket or just stick to knitting squares (20cm x 20cm).
Remember, the SPCAs and other animal welfare organisations are also in dire need of blankets for the pets in their care during winter, so perhaps this could be a special project for your family.
All quantities, textures and colours of wool donations are welcome.

Donations of knitted items, wool and needles will be accepted until mid-July.
