Refuse collection remains a challenge for the metro

In terms of the metro’s efforts to provide people with quality recreational facilities while promoting a healthy lifestyle, the metro is rolling out multipurpose ideal parks and maintaining existing parks. Some of the newly constructed parks are Murray Park, Boksburg Lake, Welgedacht and Palm Ridge.

Mayor Mzwandile Masina said during the State of the City Address on March 18 that the demand for waste removal has been on the rise in the metro.

This is in line with the increase in the population, new township establishments and immigration.

“This has seen a huge leap in the number of backyard dwellers seeking jobs and economic opportunities,” said Masina.

“In response to this challenge, a comprehensive strategy was developed and is being rolled out incrementally to date. A new five-year waste collection contract will soon be advertised with new, improved features aimed at increasing our efficiency.

“The contract will cover eight broad areas and is aimed at improving our services based on the recently adopted turnaround strategy.

“We are further proposing the introduction of a two-shift system, which will ensure that our metro remains clean at all times,” Masina said.
