Shavathon unites the community for a great cause

Shavathons in Boksburg were held among other places at the East Point Shopping Centre, East Rand Mall and East Rand Flea Market.

Hundreds of people across the Boksburg area showed that they care when they shaved, sprayed or donated their ponytails for Cansa’s 17th national Shavathon this past weekend.

This year’s theme was “Hope 2020” as participants are giving hope to cancer survivors and loved ones by showing solidarity with them in the fight against cancer when supporting the event.

The Shavathon had most shoppers excited, however, others were emotional as they are affected by the disease.

Those who didn’t want to shave or spray their hair could show their support by making a contribution or purchasing shavathon items like socks, wraps and buffs.

Chardae Jairus, marketing manager of East Point, described the event as a success and said this will definitely not be the last Shavathon they organise.

She highlighted that a salon in the centre, Wizards Hair Studio, donated 58 bundles of hair which include multiple ponytails that is collected throughout the year.

Volunteers at the East Rand Mall, Desireé Werner, Lazalea Reddy, Prabashni Reddy (floor manager) and Pule Moloi had fun at the Shavathon.

The hairstylist who collects these ponytails is Nina Morgenrood.

Shoppers at the centre were treated to a surprise flash mob performed by Deux Evolve Dance Academy.

Selfie boards were also available to share the fun and action with others while creating awareness of cancer and the need to support cancer survivors.

Sonia Pretorius from Cansa East Rand expressed her gratitude to those who supported the event.

“We are extremely passionate about this cause and will continue to raise awareness of the fight against cancer,” said Pretorius.

“We encourage the East Rand community to join us at the Cansa Relay for Life that will take place at the Boksburg Stadium on March 7 and 8,” Pretorius said.

She said Cansa is committed to connecting people facing cancer with information, day-to-day help as well as emotional support they need in the communities where they live.

“Our aim is to ensure that cancer survivors and their loved ones don’t have to face cancer alone.

“To fund our unique, integrated service and our holistic care and support to those affected by cancer, Cansa relies on the goodwill of individuals, government and corporate partners to support projects such as the Shavathon.”
