Metro reveals cause of Monday’s major power outage

The Monday morning power outage left thousands of people stuck in monster traffic jams on major routes, including Rondebult, Rietfontein, Pretoria, Main Reef, Field, Wit Deep and North Rand roads, as well as part of the R21.

The Ekurhuleni metro apologises to residents for the unplanned power interruption which hit part of Boksburg on Monday, causing heavy traffic congestion on major routes in and out of the city.

“The fault that caused the traffic problems and unplanned power outage in the Witfield area was a network problem at our main substation.

“One of our 40MVA transformers at the Witfield substation failed and needed to be repaired. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said the metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.

The power reportedly went off at around 3am, and some of our readers questioned why there were no metro police officers deployed at intersections to help control traffic during the outage.

Responding to this question, Gadebe said EMPD officers were already committed in other equally important duties.
