Urban Ruins writing competition promotes creativity among youth
Caxton Local Media, who supported the initiative, judged the entries of the writing competition.
Urban Ruins recently handed out the prizes to the winners of its 2019 Mandela Day writing competition.
According to Leigh Ingle, Urban Ruins founding member, the Write for Madiba @ 67 Words competition served as a fund-raising project while promoting literacy skills throughout the community.
Learners were invited to compose and submit short stories, poetry or prose. Some of the younger entrants had to draw their entries.
Themes ranged from natural disasters to war to Madiba.

Prizes on offer included Lego packs, laptop packs and a phone.
Boksburg Lake Rotary Club, Macsteel, 3G Mobile and Polyscopes CC donated the prizes.
The organisers of the competition, along with the sponsors and a couple of the winning learners, also went live on air as Caxton Radio promoted the Urban Ruins writing competition, which is set to be an annual event.

- Grade 5: Nikita Pieters (Goudrand)
- Grade 6: Mmbali Mnana (Reiger Park)
- Grade 7: Francina Nyambasa (Villa Lisa Primary), Keneilwe Sekhoto (Villa Lisa Primary)
- Grade 8: Nonhlanhla Khumalo (Reiger Park)
- Grade 9: Gabriella Costa-Tre (St Dominics)
- Grade 10: Bianca Pedzisayi (Ashton Manor)
- Grade 11: Nolwandle Khumalo (Oos Rand Secondary)
- Grade 12: Amogelang Mashinini (Woodlands).
