Residents call for speed humps to curb speeding in Boksburg Easst
Apart from the danger posed by speeding drivers, residents are also concerned about the rate of crime in the area.
Concerned residents in Boksburg East want speed humps installed outside St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls, saying they are increasingly frustrated with the perpetual accidents allegedly caused by speeding drivers.
According to one of the concerned residents, Carol Ova, who works at an office block located on the affected streets, a lot of motorists tend to speed along Kruger and lower Commissioner streets, putting the lives of residents, including schoolchildren, at risk.
“A number of serious accidents took place here. In the latest incident, a speeding bakkie skipped a red traffic light, crashed into an elderly woman’s car and her car then crashed into the nearby Spar, landing inside the building on Commissioner Street.
“Such incidents could have been prevented if there were traffic-calming measures on the streets. We now live in constant fear of parking our cars in the roadside parking because a lot of vehicles speed along the road outside our offices.”
The affected residents revealed that they have, on October 18, met with Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos who, during the meeting, advised them to send a formal request to the municipality to consider erecting traffic-calming measures, such as speed humps, on the affected roads.
De Vos confirmed the meeting and said the roads in question definitely needs speed humps because some motorists drive at high speeds when using these roads.
“The area is a hive of activity with hundreds of schoolgirls in the mornings and afternoons, and the lack of traffic-calming measures put all road users at high risk.
“Many people have indicated that they fear that their daughters will be knocked down by speeding vehicles. I’m also going to make recommendations to the relevant department to install speed humps in the area,” said de Vos.
De Vos, however, stated that in his ward, they have been struggling to get the metro to install speed humps as many of their applications had been rejected.
“We have sent requests to the municipality for several roads in Parkrand, Parkdene, Freeway Park and other areas, but according to the metro they all didn’t meet the requirements for the implementation of speed humps.”
