To alleviate water shortage in Witkoppie Ridge, about R38-million has been set aside by the metro to build a second reservoir.
According to the metro, construction work began on October 1 and the completion of the work will take 12 months.
Ward 17 Clr Simon Lapping confirmed to the Advertiser that the capacity of this reservoir will be about 10 million litres.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said: “The new reservoir is being constructed to meet the new water and sanitation guidelines of providing 36-hour storage in the reservoir supply zone and also to meet the demands for future developments within the reservoir supply zone.”
Lapping said the reason why a new reservoir was needed was that whenever there was an electricity outage the water would run out after five hours.
“Last year the metro brought in a generator so that when the power goes off the generator will kick in to supply water,” Lapping said.
