Rumours of schools being burnt in Boksburg are false alarms

The Advertiser is aware of false rumours going around that there are groups of protesters who are apparently closing and burning down schools in Boksburg and surrounding areas.

Our local police say such claims are completely untrue, as there is no burning of schools in Boksburg.

There are also a lot of rumours going around that protesters had apparently burnt down Goedehoop Primary School in Reiger Park and Nokulunga Primary School in Katlehong. However, the Reiger Park police would not confirm such rumours, saying there was no such thing as burning of a school in the area.

A reporter from our sister publication Kathorus Mail is at the Katlehong school, and based on her observation and information obtained from staff the school was not burnt.

Apparently Nokulunga Primary staff let the children go home as early as 9am following the unfounded rumours circulating on social media.

The Boksburg police described the claims as “malicious rumours” and false alarms, causing unnecessary panic among parents.

Several schools confirmed that following this false alarm, concerned parents rushed to the schools to fetch their little ones.

Residents are urged to refrain from spreading such unsubstantiated rumours said to be connected to the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the city.
