Video: Editor encourages learners to read to expand horizons

An extract of the first chapter of The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien was also read, in order to cultivate a love for reading among the learners.

In support of National Book Week in September, culminating in the Book Fair, the Advertiser recently visited Oosrand Secondary School in Reiger Park to encourage learners to read.

Riaan Engelbrecht, editor of the Boksburg Advertiser, along with Fanie Mthupha, the news editor, popped into one of the English classes.

This also forms part of Caxton Local Media’s #WeRead and #CaxtonCares campaigns.

Engelbrecht encouraged the young minds to read books because by reading they can empower and liberate themselves through education.

Teacher Deon van der Merwe supported the message, reminding the class of the importance of education and that reading plays an important role in self-development.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
