New developments in case of Boksburg woman who allegedly stole R460-m

As part of the recent developments in the case, members of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Unit have arrested the accused’s boyfriend and son.

Many of you may recall our report on the 45-year-old Cinderella woman who allegedly defrauded her former employee of over R460-million.

According to Hawks spokesman Capt Ndivhuwo Mulamu, Hildegard Antoinette Steenkamp’s boyfriend, Deon Peterse (45), and son, Johannes Steenkamp (23), were arrested and charged with fraud late last year.

They were granted bail of R20 000 each.

The key fraud accused, Hildegard Steenkamp, who is still out on bail of R250 000, allegedly defrauded a medical equipment company supplier, Medtronic, of over R460-m.

Mulamu said Hildegard, who worked as an accountant at the Midrand-based company, allegedly duplicated payments by transferring money directly into her late husband’s bank account.

Hildegard was arrested by the Hawks Commercial Crime Unit on December 13, and made her first appearance in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on December 15, when she was granted bail.

She, along with her co-accused, made their latest appearance in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in June this year, and the case was postponed to August 14 for disclosure.

It was reported that years after Hildegard resigned‚ the company’s new accountant picked up irregularities and the information was then handed to the Hawks.

Following a three-month investigation, the Hawks descended on her house with search-and-seizure warrants and attached the woman’s 11 luxury vehicles, motorcycles and seven immovable properties as well as furniture, appliances and jewellery worth millions of rands.
