David Branch’s offer to help met with an overwhelming response
“Family members should also remember that you help somebody who doesn’t want to be helped. It’s a choice they have to make for themselves and rehab is vital.”
David Branch, a recovering drug addict, has inspired many with his success story.
In a previous interview with the Advertiser, David made it clear that he wanted to help people who are struggling with addiction.
The response to his request was huge.
He said that he suspected that people in the community might need guidance as the problem has become dire. But, he did not expect the response to be this overwhelming.
“I know that drug abuse is a big problem in the community, which is why I offered to help where I can. But I didn’t expect so many people to respond,” said David, who now owns a successful business in Boksburg.
“It was challenging as I have to keep up with my own recovery. However, helping others is helping me to stay clean.”
David was not surprised when most of the people seeking help turned out to be concerned family members.
“It’s quite common. It gets to a point where it’s unbearable, then it gets worse and then family members seek help.
“I’m grateful that I could speak to the family members as they could give a background and explain how serious the problem is.
“Most addicts are in denial and won’t admit the urgency of the matter.”
David said the people who needed his help were between the ages of 20 and 40.
“They are struggling with addictions to drugs from nyaope to cocaine, crystal meth and dagga.
“The problem is that drugs are becoming more accessible and social media and movies are making it appear acceptable and glamorous.”
David said that he mostly assisted people with advice and suggestions.
“You can make recommendations and show them the road, but at the end of the day it’s in their hands.
