Metro prioritises Boksburg civic centre lifts repairs

The metro has apparently managed to appoint contractors to attend to the lifts problems.

The Ekurhuleni metro regrets the inconvenience caused by elevators which have been out of order for some time at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, they assure residents and staff that work to fix the lifts will be prioritised.

Early last month, the Advertiser reported that out of the seven lifts at the council-owned building in the Boksburg CBD, only three are working.

And to make matters worse, it has already taken the metro a long time to address the problem, leading to continuing frustration and forcing workers and the public to climb flights of stairs to ascend and descend the seven-storey building.

The lift that are working have already been compromised by lack of maintenance and are most likely to also become dysfunctional as they are now being overused.

The metro has, however, this week, confirmed it has finally managed to appoint contractors to attend to the lifts problems.

Gadebe said the service providers who will maintain the City’s lifts were appointed last month.

“The contract will be in place from July 1 to June 30, 2021, and the service provider received instruction to give priority to the lifts at the Boksburg Civic Centre,” said Gadebe.

The metro didn’t divulge the name of the new contractor, and failed to answer some of the Advertiser’s questions, including those pertaining to the reason for the delay in correcting the problem and the cost of replacing the old lifts with new ones.

  • Not unique

The problems faced at the civic centre are not unique and highlight a general problem in council-owned buildings across Ekurhuleni.

This includes the elderly citizens at Andries Scribante Haven in Cason, who, despite multiple promises by the municipality, have since 2017 been left without lifts to get to and from their flats in the multi-storey building.

The metro previously cited issues of appointing a contractor as one of the reasons for the delays in replacing the lifts at Andries Scribante Haven.
