The Boksburg SPCA has so many people coming into their society on a daily basis searching in their kennels and catteries for their lost pet.

According to Boksburg SPCA manager Maggie Mudd, they take down the owner’s details, but sadly many of these owners never, ever, find their pets and are sometimes left not knowing what happened to their lost animal.

“On the other hand, we also know there are members of the general public who find lost animals and then decide they would like to keep them.

“We would like to point out that this is actually theft as they are holding onto something that does not belong to them.

“This act is very unfair to the original owner who may be desperate to find their lost pet and they tend to go to their local SPCA (sometimes going to all the SPCA’s in the vicinity) regularly to search for their pet, never to find it there and never getting closure.”

Mudd said the Boksburg SPCA is the official pound for small animals (cats and dogs) and all strays.

“By law, all lost animals must be brought into the SPCA and placed into the pound for seven days. This period gives the owner of the lost animal the opportunity to come into the society to look for their lost pet.

“If the animal is not claimed by the owner within the seven-day period, then it will be moved to the SPCA kennels and be placed up for adoption,” Mudd said.

Mudd highlighted that if people who find these lost animals would like to keep them they must first bring the lost animal into the Boksburg SPCA, allow it to remain for the official pound period of seven days, and then, if the animal is not claimed, they can legally adopt the animal.

“This is the correct procedure that should be followed to allow the original owner the chance of finding their lost pet.”
