An employee of the City of Ekurhuleni was arrested on Friday, May 24 following an in-depth and lengthy investigations.
According to chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, complaints were received about his alleged illegal selling of jobs.
“Allegations were that he was selling positions advertised at the City of Ekurhuleni. The suspect (39) works in the Human Resources Department,” said Kgasago.
Kgasago said the suspect was picked up from his residence in Benoni on Friday morning around 9am.
“He had just resumed duties on May 2 following a three month suspension. Investigations revealed that an Eastern Cape Province man who had in 2014 visited Ekurhuleni had his identity document and cellphone stolen.
“His stolen ID was apparently used to open a banking account into which monies for selling jobs were paid in.
“Investigations by the EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit included travelling to the Eastern Cape where the man whose identity document was used was cleared after submitting solemn statements that he was not involved.”
Kgasago said with the assistance of the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act, the cellphone number reflected on the job advertisements, scamming unsuspecting desperate job-seekers, was the suspect’s downfall.
“The EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit members uncovered cellphones, several sim cards and a laptop at his place. ”
The DA in Ekurhuleni congratulated the EMPD’s investigation unit on the arrest.
“We hope that the arrest is not a once-off event, but rather the start of a trend that sees a clamp down on corrupt officials operating within the metro,” said Clr Jaco Terblanche, DA member of the Community Safety Oversight Committee.
“The DA is encouraged by these developments and call on the EMPD to continue their corruption crackdown in the interests of creating a better Ekurhuleni for our residents.
“The only way that South Africa can grow is when there is clean governance with zero tolerance of corruption,” said Terblanche.
