New Villa Liza neighbourhood watch calls for action
However, sponsors for uniform bicycles and whistles are needed.
A newly established neighbourhood watch has its eye on crime and members are determined to make a difference in the Villa Liza Extension One community.
Ayanda Nkosi left his job in Cape Town to start the watch about two months ago in an effort to keep his mother safe and to decrease crime in the area.
For R50, residents will get a sticker to display their involvement, a whistle, and will be added to a community WhatsApp group, which now has 1 000 members.
The whistle serves as an alarm system.
Close neighbours can inform the neighbourhood watch when they hear a whistle and the sound can scare criminals away.
“There had been an increase in crime and myself and another resident, Nhlanhlo Lepoto, decided to take action, to start patrolling our neighbourhood and deter criminal activities,” said Ayanda.
“We are also planning on moving to Dawn Park, Windmill Park and other communities who are in need of our services.”
Ayanda said more residents slowly joined as the word spread about what they were trying to do and what they have accomplished. More patrollers will be selected at the next meeting.
Young people like Tebogo Mathibedi and Michael Ratweni are also getting involved.
The watch is also creating several job opportunities, while they also relies on police assistance during patrols if they come across a suspicious activity.
