Mass sterilisation and vaccination drive held at Pet and Pool Pitstop

The goal of this event was to create awareness and to prevent thousands of unwanted dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, from being needlessly destroyed.

A mass animal sterilisation and vaccination drive was held at Pet and Pool Pitstop in Rietfontein Road over the weekend.

Veterinarian students from Unisa, along with vets, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and LK Consulting made this day possible.

Ria Minnaar, manager of Pet and Pool Pitstop, initiated the event as she wanted to help residents who are unable to vaccinate and sterilise their pets.

The public also donated food for the Boksburg SPCA as a token of their appreciation. The turnout was bigger than expected.

Residents young and old were eager to sign up their dogs and cats for sterilisation.

Gideon and Jani Bezuidenhout are excited to get Sheila sterilised.

“I want to thank the public for their patience and support. I am also grateful for everybody who helped me to make a success of this event. The staff and volunteers tried their best to assist everyone,” said Minnaar.

“We will also be better prepared for the next event as we know what to expect now. Something had to be done to assist the community to prevent unwanted litters ending up in front of my shop door.”

She said the sterilisation of pets goes a long way in addressing the problem of stray animals.
