Protest action: All clear in Bokburg North
It has come to the Advertiser’s attention that the group was protesting against companies they accuse of giving preference to foreign job applicants over South Africans.
The Boksburg North protest, which saw a group of demonstrators burning tyres and blockading several roads, including Paul Smit, 14th Avenue and other roads in Anderbolt, has come to an end and the area has been cleared.
The protest was not about service delivery as reported earlier.
The protest began in the early hours of April 16, making several streets impassable to motorists travelling in the area.
Members of the Public Order Policing unit (POP), EMPD, CPF and local security companies were deployed and managed to arrest 19 protesters, according to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube.
“The arrested suspects were charged with public violence and contravening the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.
“Those who were interviewed said they were not happy because foreigners are getting preference in employment in some companies around 14th and 15th avenues, while they (South Africans) are also unemployed looking for jobs,” said Ramaube.
It is unclear whether those companies are aware of the complaints against them.
