Exercise caution: Violent protests block Main Reef Road in Angelo, Lilianton

Motorists are urged to avoid the stretch of Main Reef Road in Lilianton and Angelo informal settlement due to a violent protest action taking place in the area.

EMPD has deployed officers to the area where community members are reportedly burning tyres and throwing stones at passing vehicles.

Reports received indicate that the metro disconnected illegal electricity connections in the informal settlement over the weekend.  In retaliation, the angry residents took to the streets at midnight and began pelting stones and rocks at motorists, bringing traffic to a halt.

The protest is continuing and reportedly flared up again this afternoon, and saw protesters burning tyres and throwing stones at vehicles.

The protest could adversely affect people travelling between Knights and Boksburg North, so to avoid being caught in the violent protest, motorists are advised to rather use Commissioner Street along Delmore Garden, or Pretoria Road and travel along Witfield.
