Man to face the music after making up hijacking story

The SAPS have warned the public on numerous occasions that perjury is a serious crime and the consequences can be severe.

A case of defeating the ends of justice has been opened against a 24-year-old man who allegedly lied about being hijacked on February 28.

The man said he was hijacked on Bartlett Road on his way back from a pub.

Boksburg North station commander Col Kumbulani Mbatha said: “The man said while driving back home he was overtaken and cornered by a bakkie.

“He alleged that two men came out of the bakkie and he was forced inside his car boot and taken to Johannesburg.

“The supposed victim alleged that he was released around 9am on Friday where he walked from Johannesburg to Boksburg.”

According to Mbatha, the man went straight home on Friday and only reported the case on Saturday around 2pm.

A hijacking case was opened and he was told to come back again on March 4.

Mbatha said a thorough investigation found that he wasn’t hijacked, but had lied.

“He confessed that he was in Benoni on the night and his VW Polo has been kept by drug dealers to whom he owes money,” Mbatha said.
