Mob stones suspected thief

The Reiger Park police sent out a stern warning to members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands following the man’s killing.

Police have launched a murder investigation after an alleged thief was stoned to death in the recently constructed informal settlement called Brown Valley on Commissioner Street, opposite Delmore Garden.

According to the Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Const Jan Mokwana, information gathered from the scene suggested that the man was attacked by an angry group of community members on Friday afternoon, February 8.

“The community alleged that the man was spotted carrying goods stolen from residents. A group of people caught the suspect and stoned him to death,” said Mokwana.

The suspect, whose identity was not immediately made available, was declared dead on the scene.

The people whose items the slain man allegedly stole did not come forward to open a case. Investigations into the attack are ongoing.

* In another violent crime within the Reiger Park policing precinct, three people were injured in a shooting, believed to be gang-related, in Reiger Park on February 8.

According to Mokwana, information gathered from the scene indicated that gunmen arrived and opened fire. It’s suspected that the gunmen aimed their firearms at their target, but the bullets hit “innocent bystanders”.

The victims suffered gunshot wounds to the legs and spine. They were rushed to hospital for treatment.
