VIDEO: From dump site to beloved park
The park today sports a neat lawn, decorated pathways, a small thatched shelter, a tiny splash pool and a vegetable garden.
A 48-year-old DIY guru, Ishmael Msiza, has turned a dump site into a beautiful, friendly park for the community of Ramaphosa township.
Msiza got his creative juices flowing after the well-known eyesore was cleaned last year on Mandela Day by Eskom staff for their 67 minutes initiative.
According to Msiza, he was told to look after the place.
Seeing that he was unemployed, he was encouraged to open a car wash to prevent people from dumping in that site.
“Due to financial constraints, I couldn’t continue with the car wash because I wasn’t funded. I then decided to clean that place thoroughly to make it an entertainment park for children and adults.
“It took me months to upgrade the garden and, surprisingly, under the rubble I stumbled upon a big historical rock that dates back 20 years.
“When I was finished, the community couldn’t believe their eyes that I had managed to clean and decorate that place on my own.”
Msiza is appealing to the public to donate paint, cement and sheets of corrugated iron zinc to continue decorating the park.
