WATCH: Defeating the odds to achieve eight distinctions

She will now be studying accounting science (BAccSc) at the University of the Witwatersrand.

It’s true when they say a persons’ background doesn’t define who they are or where they’ll end up or achieve.

This hits home for 18-year-old Zandile Sentomile who achieved eight distinctions, making her the top learner at her former school, Villa Liza Secondary School.

Zandile, who lives in Villa Liza, proved to her peers that hard work pays off regardless of which school one attends.

She comes across as a shy girl with a big personality and a hunger for success.

Zandile attended Villa Liza Secondary School from Grade Nine after her father lost his job. At the time she attended Falcon Educational College.

“The shift of changing schools was very traumatising for me because I had to adjust from being in a class where there are 30 learners to a class where there is many more.

“With time, I started getting used to my new school,” she said.

Zandile said her parents have always been supportive even when she was still in primary school.
