Security guard set alight in Jet Park strike action, dies in hospital

It is believed that the attackers are affiliated to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa).

The employee who was doused in petrol and set alight, allegedly by a group of people believed to be part of the plastics industry strike, has died in hospital.

The victim was on duty at Herber Plastic, located on Yaldwyn Road, Jet Park, when the said group of strikers stormed the company and attacked staff, including the guard, on Friday, November 30.

The company confirmed that their employee had succumbed to his injuries and died on Tuesday night.

According to a source, although the security guard is the first fatality of the strike in Boksburg, he is not the only person to have suffered serious injuries during the attacks on Friday.

“One of the directors was assaulted and is currently in ICU, along with his secretary, who was stabbed in the neck by the strikers.”

Jet Park business owners on Yaldwyn Road had their premises vandalised and five motor vehicles, including a truck, torched by the group of people believed to be part of the protracted plastics industry strike.

The police were not immediately available to comment on the matter.

* Reportedly, Jet Park was again rocked by strike action this week.
