Taxi associations to smoke peace pipe

Taxi operations in Windmill Park were halted for a while in 2014.

The Ekurhuleni metro has confirmed that a pre-feasibility study was conducted in 2016 and recommended a possible piece of land where the Windmill Park taxi rank would be constructed.

However, the pre-feasibility study could not be concluded due to pending taxi associations operational agreement.

Windmill Park has been a hotspot for taxi violence since 2012 due to the Reiger Park and Vosloorus taxi associations’ conflicts over routes.

In November 2014, five people were killed and two injured after gunmen opened fire on taxi owners and passengers in Windmill Park.

A temporary taxi rank was under construction near the Windmill Park Primary School which was meant to alleviate the transport woes in the area.

Construction began but somehow it fell through the cracks.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is to commence with conflict management processes by engaging in discussions with affected taxi operators.

“The possible routes were compiled and a draft report was also compiled, but the taxi associations did not reach an agreement.

“The process of engaging the taxi associations to conclude the operational plan is still in progress,” Gadebe said.

Meanwhile, Abel Tsotetsi, public relation officer for Vosloorus and Boksburg District Taxi Association said the violence between the two associations have stopped, and now await the government to reopen the taxi rank.
