It is important to keep your pet tick and flea free

With bad infestation of the property it may be necessary to use a room fogger to help kill the fleas

Both ticks and fleas are bloodsucking external parasites that can make pets feel ill.

Maggie Mudd, Boksburg SPCA manager, said fleas can, in large numbers, cause irritation such as itching and scratching and can lead to the animal becoming anaemic.

“Some animals can show an allergic reaction to flea bites and develop flea bite dermatitis at the base of the tail and on the inner thighs. Fleas are also carriers of some diseases and also tapeworm.”

Mudd said tick bites can cause dogs to develop biliary, which if left untreated can result in the death of the animal, so it is very important to keep pets free of these parasites.

“If you find ticks or fleas on your pet it is advisable to take them to the vet and purchase appropriate powders and/or dips.

“With fleas, it is also very important to treat the environment as well as the animal – so dog or cat blankets, carpets within the house would need to be treated.
