Still no lifts for elderly at Scribante
It now appears as if the lifts will now arrive at the end of October and installations should be complete by mid-December this year
Like a stuck record, the complaints of elderly residents of Andries Scribante Haven in Cason is falling on deaf ears.
The Advertiser reported on the broken lifts at Scribante several times this year.
In the most recent article in July, it was noted the future still seems troubled for the residents as has been the case for a number of years.
The elderly residents are still forced to use the stairs to get to and from their flats. Some of them have to struggle up three flights of stairs with wheelchairs, walkers and shopping bags and attempt not to hurt themselves in the process.
The old lifts were removed after months of complaints made by residents and ward councillor Marius de Vos to council.
Council promised the lifts would be replaced and working by now, but they are yet to be delivered from China.
Back then project manager Pumzile Naytlo said the best date for the lifts is end August.
De Vos wrote a letter to the city manager, Imogen Mashazi, expressing his concerns about the failed delivery of the lifts.
In response, de Vos said Nyatlo said a meeting was held with the contractors.
“The contractors indicated the lifts were delayed due to final payment to the supplie,” said Nyatlo.
