Reiger Park thieves handed suspended sentences

The six months sentences were suspended for five years on condition they were not convicted of the same crime within a five years period.

Five Reiger Park thieves have each been sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing bolts and nuts from DRDGold’s Ergo plant in Reiger Park.

Cheslyn de Jagger (21), Luerano Klassen (20), Riaan Harmaans (20), Eugene Aldridge (22) and Deon van Wyk (29), were arrested after they stole bolts and nuts worth about R1000 from the mine on December 6, 2017.

The five men also faced an alternative charge of malicious damage to property emanating from their illegal removal of bolts and nuts from mining pipes on December 6, 2017.

All five accused pleaded not guilty on July 13. However, they were all found guilty of the main count on August 6 and sentenced on August 7 for theft.

Van Wyk has a previous conviction. On July 2010 he was convicted of suspected stolen goods. The others have no previous convictions.

Magistrate Emanuel Magamba presided, and prosecutor Angeline Mooiman represented the state.
