Adventurous local doctor pens a book on mummies
Apart from being a doctor, writer and a painter, he also loves travelling the world.
Sunward Park resident, Dr Gavin Moore, is in the process of writing a book about different types of mummies from around the world.
The 54-year-old multi-talented doctor was born and bred in Boksburg. He was educated at Christian Brothers College.
“Growing up in Boksburg as a young man was pleasant. In the 1980s we used to go to the Vaal Dam on the boat with my cousins,” said Moore, who holds a BSc honours degree in Pharmacology and a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
“I was an intern at the Hillbrow Hospital after finishing medicine in 1991. I then went to England for six months as a medical officer in 1996 and then I came back to South Africa.”
“My main interest has always been in TB and HIV diseases,” said the doctor, who has worked at the Sizwe Tropical Diseases Hospital for nine years and who has also applied his medical trade in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and in London.
Moore is a learned man of many other hidden talents. In his house, you are greeted by a beautifully painted portrait depicting an Egyptian.
“I have painted over 40 art pieces which are all influenced by my experiences and surroundings,” said Moore.
Moore said mummies have always interested him, which has inspired him to write a book.
“The book deals with mummies from all over the world, including how mummies are made and why different cultures make them. The book is almost finished. I’m just left with the bibliography and pictures,” said Moore.
The skilled artist highlighted that there are different types of mummies. He said Egyptians used to mummify their bodies and used to dry and wrap them in bandages, while there are also natural mummies like the Iceman found in the Alps.
Regarding his travels, he said he has been to Egypt four times and he has been to every continent except Antarctica.
“I have climbed the Kilimanjaro Mountain, dived in the Red Sea and visited the Amazon jungle.”
Moore said anyone who has interests about the history of mummies will be interested to read the book.
“Once the book is finished I will send the manuscripts to Amazon and it will be available as an e-book,” Moore said.
