Old Magistrate’s Court gets a new lease on life

The hired contractor started working on revamping the building in October last year.

The Ekurhuleni offices at the old Magistrate’s Court are set to open towards the end of May.

The revamping of the court, that will now be utilised by the metro, is still underway. The building is situated on Church Street and dates back to 1889, making it a historic site.

Phillip Mathabela, the owner of the construction company, said: “A lot has been done to make this place beautiful for the public.

“About 85 per cent of the work, like ceilings, tiles, painting, plumbing, electrifying the building, carpentry, roofing and plastering, has been completed.”

According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, the relevant department/s to occupy the offices will be determined in due course and services to be rendered here are to be general municipal services.

The property had been left unattended for many years due to a lack of funding, Gadebe added.
