Don’t sell your pets, give them up to the SPCA
Due to tough economic times, the SPCA has received frequent calls from pet owners advising the SPCA to come collect their animals as they can’t afford to keep them anymore.

The Boksburg SPCA urges pet owners to refrain from selling their animals in exchange for money.
This comes after a man was found selling a tortoise to motorists at the corner of Barry Marais and Van Wyk Louw roads recently.
According to the Boksburg SPCA manager, Maggie Mudd, the man gave lots of reasons as to why he had the tortoise.
“He said he found the tortoise in his garden but then he changed his story by saying that someone had given it to him. We suspect that he probably found it and tried to make money by selling it.”
Mudd said the man in question was not arrested because a member of the public removed the tortoise from the individual just before a Boksburg SPCA inspector arrived.
“It is illegal to sell indigenous animals and we urge the public not to support this criminal act by paying for the animals being sold on the side the road.
“This simply encourages more illegal trading of animals. We ask that the public rather advise us if they see anyone trying to sell animals on the side of the road. This can include puppies, kittens and chickens as well as any wild animals,” Mudd said.
