Electricity thieves have become violent in Reiger Park

Theft of cables and illegal connections is rife in the suburb

The municipality has admitted that there is a serious problem of electricity and cable theft in Reiger Park and surrounding areas.

The metro has also raised concerns over how cable thieves are becoming more violent.

“Recently patrolling guards in Reiger Park were held-up by cable thieves. This was the first incident in more than a year,” said Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson.

“There was also a gunfight and one of the EMPD personnel was wounded in the hand. The cables were cut up in pieces but recovered by EMPD.

“Removal of illegal connections in Reiger Park and Joe Slovo informal settlement was planned for February 5, however, due to service delivery protests that occurred in Ward 61 and 62, law enforcement agencies felt that we had to cancel our operation.”

Gadebe added that a new date for a blitz on electricity thieves has already been scheduled. -@MthuphaFanie
