Leeuwpoort project steering committee elected

Overall attendance of public meeting was small

Residents of Wards 31 and 43 gathered at the Sunward Park High School hall to elect a steering committee for the Leeuwpoort Housing Development project on January 24.

The meeting was attended by residents of Sunward Park, Freeway Park, Klippoortjie, Groeneweide, Windmill Park, Dawn Park and Van Dyk Park.

The elected committee will be responsible for giving feedback to the community in the areas for which they are elected.

Despite considerable efforts to publicise the meeting during previous public meetings and advertorial in this publication, the overall attendance was disappointingly small.

In several instances attendees suggested that the meeting be postponed because they felt that there was insufficient community representation.

However, the chair of the meeting, Lovemore Chauke from the office of Ekurhuleni MMC for Human Settlements Lesiba Mpya, insisted that the elections go ahead, as postponing it would mean more delays in community participation in the process of the project.

MMC Mpya was, prior to the election, expected to give residents feedback on the progress of the mega housing project, but he never showed up.

Instead he delegated Chauke to represent him.

Chauke told the Advertiser that feedback on the progress of the mega housing project will be made available to the public during upcoming public meetings that will soon be organised by the steering committee members in their respective communities.
