Neglected pups up for adoption, owner will face charges

Animal abuse simply cannot be tolerated.

Four puppies were confiscated by Boksburg SPCA in the Angelo Informal Settlement on December 28.

Inspector Hope Makalapa said he was notified by members of a local organisation about the puppies being kept in a filthy environment with no water and food.

Makalapa said he went to the address on Christmas Day and found seven puppies.

He issued a warning to the owner to rectify the situation.

“The owner was on the property but didn’t seem to care what I was saying.

“I went back the following day to do a follow-up and there had been no change – the puppies were still being kept in the same conditions with no food and water.

Seven cross-breed puppies were being kept in appalling conditions in Angelo Informal Settlement. By the time the SPCA arrived back at the property with the police and a warrant, only four of these puppies were left on the property and were confiscated.

“On December 28, I went to the house with the Boksburg police and with a warrant to confiscate the puppies.

“Nobody was home – we suspect they saw us coming with the police and ran away,” Makalapa said.

“On this day, there were only four puppies on the property – three males and a female – and we confiscated them all.”

They are cross-breed puppies.

Makalapa said the owner contravened the Animal Protection Act, which sets out cleanliness, no unnecessary starvation of animals, no denying food or water to animals, hygiene and medical treatment.

He is in the process of compiling evidence and he will be laying formal charges against the owner of the puppies.

The puppies are up for adoption at the SPCA.
