Spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela said witnesses told police that a gunman arrived and fired several shots at Groenewald.
Phathela said he couldn’t say how many shots were fired but stated that three bullets hit the victim.
“One hit him in the back of the head, another in the forehead and a third in the left hand. He died at the scene.
“The gunman was seen running away from the scene and getting into a white car, which sped off,” said Phathela.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, but police are investigating a case of murder.
Anyone with information is asked to come forward.
Groenewald was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for a Boksburg North murder and seven years for possession of an unlicenced weapon in 2014.
According to the police, he was previously arrested on murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, sexual assault and possession of illegal weapon cases by the Algoa Park SAPS, Reiger Park SAPS, Boksburg North SAPS and Boksburg SAPS. -@FanieFLK
