Relief and excitement could be seen on the faces of Boksburg High School learners who wrote their last exam paper on November 28.
About 18 learners from Boksburg High School wrote their design paper on Tuesday. They described it as “easy”, adding that they enjoyed every moment.
Most matrics across the country sat down to write their home language paper on Monday, November 27.
It was all hugs and kisses as they bid farewell to their classmates and teachers after many years of high school.
Florentia Peterson, who was with her excited mother after writing the paper, was elated that she was really done with high school.
“I am very happy and looking forward to the future. My last paper was very easy. I cruised through the paper,” she said.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, meanwhile, called upon learners to remain focused and to abstain from participating in ‘pens down parties’.
“As the National Senior Certificate examination is coming to an end on November 28, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is satisfied that it has since proceeded without any distraction besides the so-called Black Monday and the taxi strike.”
Pens down parties are events where learners, especially Grade 12s, celebrate the end of exams. Often these parties lead to tragic incidents.
“All sorts of ungodly activities are done at such events, including indulging in drugs, unprotected sex and tearing of school uniforms – something that needs to be condemned on all fronts. The department urges parents to be alert and monitor the movement of their children and discourage them from participating in such acts,” Lesufi said.
