Sponsors help babies to be snug in a rug

Members from the Anglican Church of Boksburg, who head the Oliver Tambo Memorial Hospital baby project, have thanked some of their donors who assisted them throughout the year.

The project started in 2013, after the church noticed needy mothers leaving the hospital with children wrapped in newspapers or putting them into shopping bags.

Every two weeks, with the help of the community, church members and various organisations have handed out hampers of basic clothing, blankets, baby wipes and other products to the mothers of the newborns.

The aim of the project is to send newborn babies home in comfort.

Expressing her excitement, Deacon Barbara Morrison thanked everyone who assisted them with the continuous handing out of hampers.

“We thank Ashbury College in Crystal Park, Rotary Club Aurora, and Mark Preston-Whyte who introduced us to De La Salle Holy Cross College and a radio station in Johannesburg. We would also like to thank Methodist Churches, Witfied, Alberton and Primrose for their donations,” she said.

According to Morrison, their aim this year was to cover 1500 babies but they have exceeded their target as they have helped 1502 babies.

Morrison said next year they are aiming to cover even more babies and she believes they will achieve this through the support of the community.
